His Highness Sheikh Mohammed was born in 1949 at his family home in Shindagha, near Dubai Creek. He was the third of the four sons of Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum, who ruled Dubai for 32 years from 1958. After finishing secondary school in 1965, Sheikh Mohammed moved to the UK to study English at a language school in Cambridge. The young sheikh later attended a six-month training court at the British Army’s Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, Hampshire.
In 1968, following his return to Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed accompanied his father to a meeting with the then ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, at which they agreed to a union that would lead to the establishment of a federation of emirates. After the UAE gained independence from the UK in 1971, Sheikh Mohammed was named defence minster.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Vice President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and constitutional monarch of Dubai. He has held those positions since January 2006, when he succeeded his elder brother, Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum. In February 2006, he became Prime Minister of the UAE.
Sheikh Mohammed also became heavily involved in his father’s plan to compensate for Dubai’s dwindling oil reserves by diversifying its economy and becoming an international trade and financial centre, as well as a tourist destination.Today, more than 95% of the emirate’s gross domestic product is non-oil-based, with tourism contributing 20%.
Under his leadership, Dubai’s development continued apace.In 2008, the emirate unveiled the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa; Dubai Mall, then world’s largest shopping centre by total land area; and the Dubai Metro.
Sheikh Mohammed has also become famous for his involvement in horseracing, and is credited with transforming it into a global industry. The sheikh subsequently set up the world’s largest horseracing team. Sheikh Mohammed frequently attends major horseracing events such as Royal Ascot, where he has been pictured with Queen Elizabeth II.
On 1st of February 2016, His Highness launched the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Library. With total investment of AED 1 billion, the library is the biggest in the Arab World. The one million square feet property can facilitate for 42 million visitors.
Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Centre for Awqaf and Endowment is a global consulting Awqaf foundation launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 22 March 2016. The Centre offers its services to individuals, local, regional and international foundations free of charge in order to achieve Dubai’s global vision for Awqaf and endowments.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Aviation Award aims to shine light on States, Business Organizations and Individuals around the world, by recognizing their contribution to the success of aviation industry.Aviation industry is a major contributor to not only the UAE but global economy. Its impact as the catalyst to trade and tourism is well recognized. Hundreds millions of people are directly or indirectly associated with this sector.
His Highness launched the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Water Award with total prize of USD 1 million. The global award aims to encourage leading corporations, research centers, institutions and innovators from across the world to compete to find sustainable and innovative solar-energy solutions to water problems.
Expo 2020 Dubai He has expressed his pride in welcoming the entire world to the land of tolerance. Sheikh Mohammed said: “We take pride in welcoming representatives of 192 countries to the land of tolerance, as we invest in this global gathering to find solutions to global challenges on the grounds of international cooperation that humanity is in need of.”Over the past decade, the UAE has worked tirelessly to fulfil its promise of organising a historic and unprecedented Expo.
His Highness met Dr. Arif Alvi, President of Pakistan, at Expo 2020 Dubai. The meeting explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries in a range of fields including trade, investment, energy and agriculture, among others. The meeting also discussed ways to boost trade volumes between UAE and Pakistan in the light of new emerging opportunities.
His Highness not only has leadership intelligence, resourcefulness, wisdom qualities but he is a writer, and poet also. His wisdom has played a great role in bridging the gap between both the states. It is in the benefit of both the states that such personalities play their pivotal role in bringing the nations together.
