INTERNATIONAL MARITIME CONFERENCE (IMC) HELD IN TANDEM WITH 7th MULTINATIONAL MARITIME EXERCISE AMAN 21
The three-days International Maritime Conference (IMC-21) organized on the theme of ‘Development of Blue Economy under a Secure and Sustainable Environment: A Shared Future for Western Indian Ocean Region’ by the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) under the auspices of the Pakistan Navy at Karachi. The President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi graced the Opening Session while the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi graced the Closing Ceremony as Chief Guest.
Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi attended various sessions and delivered his remarks along. Several dignitaries from across the globe attended the sessions, including Kitack Lim (IMO Secretary-General), Samuel Paparo (Commander US Naval Forces Central Command Vice Admiral), Jayathilake (Rear Admiral YMGB of Sri Lankan Navy), and Dr Aykut I. OLCER (Director of Maritime Research World Maritime University Sweden). While from Pakistan, Sardar Masood Khan (President AJK), General (Retd) Ehsanul Haq (former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee), Senator Sherry Rehman, Pervez Khattak (Minister for Defence), Ms Zartaj Gul (Minister of State for Climate Change), and other notable politicians, defence personnel and scholars attended the conference.
Eminent international and national scholars from Australia, Bahrain, China, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Turkey, UK and the USA also delivered their speeches during the three-day conference. These scholars presented their dynamic thoughts over the theme of the conference, including blue economy, decarburization of international shipping for a sustainable planet, blue growth strategy, challenges and opportunities of changing maritime dynamics in the IOR, and Emerging Geo-Strategic Environment and Indo-Pacific Strategy.
